Road trip #2

November 12th, 2008 No comments

Matt’s sister Angela came back to visit us in Scotland.  She was with us for about 10 days and wasn’t able to visit the Iona Abbey when she was here a few months ago.  So, when she made her return trip that was where we were headed…the Isle of Mull and Iona Abbey. Here is a list of things we were able to see:

-Oban
-Isle of Mull
-Iona Abbey
-2 ferry boat rides
-Campbeltown
-Highland cows
-A couple of castles
-Fun memories

We had a lot of fun hanging out together and seeing more of this beautiful country.

Lost and found

Matt found Junibacken in Sweden…basically a Children’s museum that is somewhat like a Pippi Longstocking Museum.  They had characters dressed up as Pippi and pirates (the author of Pippi Longstocking is from Sweden) and put on a show all in Swedish for the kids.  Although we couldn’t understand what they were saying, Kalani laughed and enjoyed herself.

While waiting in line to board the train…about 25 people before us…Kalani goes missing.  Matt was sitting down reading a book while I was standing in line.  I saw Kalani head towards the front of the line and then I didn’t see her again.  I had Matt searching and he asked the lady in charge of checking the tickets if she saw Kalani go through.  She assured us that she would not let a little girl get on the train without her parents.  However, Kalani is pretty sneaky and I knew that she would have made a friend and just walked in with that family.

I did pretty well at keeping it together while I couldn’t find my precious little girl.  After figuring out that the train ended upstairs where the Pippi performance was held we found Kalani playing in the house and having a Fantastic time.  I was just so happy to see her again.  When we asked her what was her favorite part of the day she looked ashamed.  So, we knew that her most favorite part of the day was when she was on that train ride all by herself.  At least she is safe and back with us again.

Sites of Sweden

My mother lived in Sweden for a brief time when she was younger while my grandfather was a “building” missionary…he built church buildings for Latter-day Saint church.  Then in 2000-2002 my grandparents returned to Sweden to work in the Temple.  So of course we had to take a train ride to the temple.  It was nice to see where my grandparents served their mission.

We were also told by many people that we needed to visit the Vasa Museum.  On 10 August 1628 the Vasa set sail on her maiden voyage and sank in Stockholm harbour.  333 years later the wreck was salvaged and it is reconstructed with 95% of it’s original pieces for all the world to see.  It is pretty amazing.

Sweden

Matt had a conference in Stockholm Sweden for 3 days.  Since the company was paying for his plane ticket and his hotel it made PERFECT sense to me that Kalani and I should tag along.  We stayed there for a week and it was great.  There was so much to see and do, and basically everyone there speaks English.  Looking at a map things appear to be very far away, but really once you start walking it isn’t that bad.  A quick run down of what we did:

Day1:  City Hall & Palace
Day 2: National Museum of Science & Technology
Day 3:  Royal Armoury
Day 4:  Vasa & Skansen
Day 5:  Bus Tour & Temple
Day 6:  Pippi Longstocking Museum

Stockholm is a great place for kids.  Basically children under 6 are FREE for everything (at least that is how it appeared to me).  And the museums were fantastic.  It kept my interest and they always have something for the kids to do as well. If anyone has the opportunity to go to Stockholm Sweden…GO!

SNOW

October 28th, 2008 No comments

Today we woke up and found this picture in our backyard.  It is the first time that Kalani or I have seen snow falling or have woken up to snow on the ground!  When I told Kalani that it was snowing outside, she jumped out of bed and ran to the window.  So, now I am going to experience living in SNOW!  I am not sure if I am excited about it or not.  I am sure we will make snow angels and snowmen before we leave Scotland.
